The problem of self-knowledge is to answer the question of how we know about our inner conscious states. This seminar is dedicated to discussing the theory of Alex Bern, which he outlined in the book "Transparency and Self-Knowledge". Bern believes that we do not have a special ability that allows us to know about consciousness, there is no inner eye that seems to be directed at mental states. On the contrary, consciousness is "transparent" for us. When we pay attention to it, we look through it, we do not see the mental or conscious properties themselves, but objects and their properties, which give us knowledge that we are in a specific state of consciousness. Therefore, consciousness is transparent. And the main question is how something that is not conscious gives us knowledge about consciousness. Bern calls this the mystery of transparency, believing that he has the answer to it.
